Company Vision: “With one product, push forward some progress, liberate some power and transform the world.”
At the entrance of the first-floor clean workshop of Shanghai Superconductor Technology Co., Ltd., the company's vision is prominently displayed. The first half of the vision is enlarged into an eye-catching slogan that greets visitors as soon as they enter the factory.
Dr. Zhu Jiamin, CEO of the company, provided an in-depth interpretation: “In the electric power sector, with the zero-resistance characteristic of high-temperature superconductors, superconducting cables, current limiters, and other practical equipment for civil use have been put into operation, marking the start of realizing the first part of the company vision. At the same time, the research and development of compact nuclear fusion has made significant progress with the support of high-temperature superconducting materials. Many research institutions and commercial companies in developed countries and regions are gradually pushing forward to realize the vision that will change the world. We look forward to the early realization of this vision, so that the second half of our company’s vision will also become a prominent slogan around the plant.” At just 37 years old, Dr. Zhu Jiamin, the first employee of the company, has experienced the entire process of Shanghai Superconductor's transition from laboratory to industrialization. There are dozens of young, high-quality talents with more than ten years’ experience in SST. A youthful team, solid technology, and leading product strength are the foundations upon which the company stands in the global HTS industry.
In 2010, Shanghai positioned “high-temperature superconductivity” as a strategic emerging industry, initiating Shanghai's journey towards leadership in the global high-temperature superconductivity sector. Not only has it boasted a complete industrial chain in the field of electric power, but leading commercial companies have also emerged in future strategic industries such as nuclear fusion. On November 15, 2024, the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization, the Development and Reform Commission, the Education Commission, and the Science and Technology Commission released “Shanghai Action Plan for Promoting High-Quality Development of the New Material Industry (2025-2027)”. The policy impetus for the application of high-temperature superconductivity in key areas has been further strengthened, leading the entire industry from the stage of 0-1 to an accelerated phase of 1-10, and then 10-100.
Established in 2011, Shanghai Superconductor holds over 80% of the domestic market share and is the core supplier and exclusive provider for multiple “world’s first” superconducting application projects. Currently, the company's annual production and sales have surpassed a thousand kilometers, covering various cutting-edge application fields such as controlled nuclear fusion, superconducting power, and high-field magnets.
Over the course of its 13 years of development, the company has received strong support from the Shanghai Municipal Committee and the Municipal Government. Science and Technology Venture Investment Corporation (Shanghai STVC Group), a state-owned core investment platform that has successfully incubated and invested in over 100 STAR Market companies, is a significant shareholder of the company. Since 2022, more industrial investors have become new shareholders of Shanghai Superconductor, including Jingda Shares and Shenneng Group, further improving the governance structure of the company.
SST has been deeply involved in several “world’s first” projects, including the large-bore 20T high-field magnet for CFS, the first 10kV three-phase coaxial high-temperature AC superconducting cable in China, the first 35kV kilometer-scale high-temperature superconducting cable in China, the world's first MW-level superconducting induction heating device, electric maglev train, the 32.35T all-superconducting magnet, the 26.8T all-REBCO high-temperature superconducting magnet, and the Energy Singularity HH70 high-temperature superconducting tokamak device, earning high recognition from domestic and international customers. The successful implementation of these application/demonstration projects has played a leading role and laid a foundation to further expand the company’s markets both domestically and internationally.
The first round of expansion for SST began at the end of 2022 and was successfully operational by the third quarter of 2024, with the current production capacity now ranking among the top globally. Now the company has initiated the second round of expansion in response to the situation where demand for the its products exceeds supply. Especially in the context of accelerated global R&D in compact nuclear fusion based on high-temperature superconducting magnets, ensuring a stable supply of high-end products in batches and the material support for various strategic R&D projects have become the company's mission for continuous 24-hour production.
Building on the past and looking to the future, the industry has taken its first step. With the hard work of professional teams in downstream applications, the vision of “transforming the world” with high-temperature superconducting materials may soon be realized!
